Africa University is a non-profit private university located in Mutare, Zimbabwe. Its development was as results of the growth of the United Methodism in African, which led to African Bishops of the United Methodist Church (UMC) to call on their church to invest in higher education provision in Africa.

Africa University is a non-profit private university located in Mutare, Zimbabwe. Its development was as results of the growth of the United Methodism in African, which led to African Bishops of the United Methodist Church (UMC) to call on their church to invest in higher education provision in Africa.
In 1980, Bishop Arthur Kulah and Bishop Emilio de Carvalho or Liberia and Angola respectively, led the advocacy of a university for all of Africa. This gave a positive response which led to birth of the Africa Initiative in 1985, and a site was selected to be Zimbabwe. In 1988, the founding of Africa University was approved in the general conference of UMC. In January 1992, the Former President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, HE, Robert Gabriel Mugabe, issued the Africa University Charter by official proclamation, making it the first recognized private university in Zimbabwe.

Africa University is affiliated to the United Methodist Church, the Association of African Universities (AAU), and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
The institution has as mission, to provide quality education within a Pan-African context through which persons can acquire general and professional knowledge and skills, grow in spiritual maturity, develop sound moral values, ethics and leadership qualities.

Africa University provides its students with academic facilities like library, laboratory, farm and amphitheaters. None the less, it as well provides non-academic facilities such on and off campus accommodation, university bus, Bonaventure dining hall, Golden Peacock Victorian Hall, clinical services, counseling and career services, and sports and fitness facilities like soccer, basketball and a gymnasium.

Africa University is ranked the 8th top University in Zimbabwe. In 2018, Africa University won the Megafest Awards, Manicaland Region 2017/18 held at the Holiday Inn in Mutare.
In that same year, AU Farm was duly recognized winning in three categories these being, Best Pig Producer, Best Poultry Producer and Best Rabbit Producer at the Manicaland Agricultural Show.
Mores so, in the following year, Africa University was awarded Tertiary Institution of the year at the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Awards.
Notwithstanding, in the same year 2019, AU Department of Health Sciences and PETRA Consortium won a $3 million education and research grant  for a five-year program funded by NIH/FIC (National Institutes of Health/ Fogarty International Centre).

Africa University has graduated notable alumni like Tonderai Kasu – Medical doctor, Messers Clemence Masango – Principal Director of Immigration in Zimbabwe, Herbert Gomba – Mayor of Harare (2018), Salifu Adam Braimah – Ghanaian Politician, and George Kambondo – Researcher.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Undergraduate Admission Requirements
Candidates applying for undergraduate programmes must have the following:
For National Students
At least five (5) GCE O- Level or equivalent with passes at C or better grades including English Language. Mathematics and Pure Science subjects for related degree programmes are a must.
GCE A-  Level or equivalent in at least 2 subjects in relevant areas of degrees of interest.

For International Students
Angola
A Secondary School Leaving Certificate is sufficient with a C grade average.

Botswana
BGCSE/IGCSE, Grade C or better in at least five subjects with English and Mathematics.
Two years at University of Botswana  is accepted (part one of a degree course, e.g. BSC part one) as equivalent to A level for entry purposes – that is to say if you have done part one of a degree course at University of Botswana you may proceed straight to your degree program without the need to do the bridging course.

Cameroon
Cameroon GCE Ordinary Level Acceptable at grade C or better in lieu of GCSE on a subject for subject basis and GCE Advanced Level Acceptable at grades A–E in lieu of GCE A level on a subject for subject basis.

Democratic Republic of Congo
Candidates are required to have completed the Diplôme d’Etat d’Etudes Secondaires du Cycle Long with a grade C or above (including Mathematics)

Ethiopia
Ethiopian General Education Certificate Examination (EGSLCE)
**This is considered to be below GCSE standard. You will be required to take a bridging course with Africa University if this is your only school leaving certificate.

West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
Candidates from this region  are required to have a grade “good” or better in order to gain entry into Africa University.

Kenya
KCSE Candidates are required to have attained a pass of C or above per subject to be considered for admission.

Malawi
Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) are acceptable at grades 1–6 in lieu of GCSE (grades A, B, C) on a subject for subject basis.

Rwanda
Candidates must have acquired a Secondary Education Advanced Level Examination Certificate with grades C or better

South Africa
Candidates are required to have attained at an average grade between 4 and 7 to be considered for a program at Africa University.

Sudan
Sudan School Certificate (SSC) is acceptable at 50% or better in lieu of GCSE on a subject for subject basis (except English language).
Candidates would need to supplement this with a bridging course.

Uganda
Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) is acceptable at grades 1–6 in lieu of GCSE on a subject for subject basis.
Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) is acceptable at grades A–E in lieu of GCE A level on a subject for subject basis.

Zambia
Zambia School Certificate is acceptable at grades 1–6 in lieu of GCSE on a subject for subject basis however it would need to be supplemented by a bridging course.

Postgraduate Admission Requirements
For Masters Degree Programme
A good Bachelor degree in relevant area and appropriate two years post Bachelor professional experience.

For Doctoral Degree Programmes
A good Master degree in the relevant area
Two year working experience is an added advantage.

Mutare is a town located on the north of the Bvumba Mountains and south of the Imbeza Valley. It originated as Fort Umtali and was built by prospectors in 1890 near the junction of the Sambi and Umtara rivers.
Its name was derived from a local word meaning “metal,” probably referring to the nearby ancient gold workings. Mutare was founded in 1897, It was declared a municipality in June 1914 and a city in 1971.
Mutare is the capital of Manicaland province. It has an estimated population of 448,810. The average annual temperature in the city is 19°C. The economy of the city is characterized by farming and mining.

Mutare is home to some notable landmarks like the Edmore Mukwindidza, the Mutare Museum, the Utopia House Museum, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Murahwa Hill, known for its rock paintings and Iron Age village, Cross Kopje with a memorial to Zimbabweans and Mozambicans killed in World War I and a nature reserve Cecil Kopje and Tigers Kloof.
More so, the city houses top corporations like Cairns Foods and Tanganda Tea, the largest food producers in Zimbabwe.
