The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, also known as ATBU, is a federal university of technology located in Bauchi, north-eastern Nigeria. The university got established in the year 1980 as the Federal University of Technology Bauchi. ATBU inherited the site that belonged to the former Bauchi State College of Arts and Science (BACAS) at Yelwa. In 1984, under the rationalisation programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the University was merged with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and was renamed as the ‘Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College’, Ahmadu Bello University. In 1988, it was de-merged from the Ahmadu Bello University and regained its autonomy as a fully-fledged independent university.

In 2019, the university’s department of Geology was recognised by the Nigeria Mining and Geoscience Society as the most dynamic department in furthering the training of geoscientists and mining specialists in Nigeria. The same department had a team of students who qualified for the semi-finals of the Imperial Barrel Award Competition. ATBU started with an initial batch of 100 students, a number that has accrued over the years to over 10,000 students. The university currently has a staff of over 1000.

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University provides several academic and non-academic facilities for its students. These facilities include conference halls, an auditorium, a teaching hospital, an in-door Multi-purpose Sports Hall, a garden (collection contains 24 species), a microfinance bank, a security unit, a guest inn, a farm and an ICT centre. Some notable alumni of ATBU include Isa Ali Pantami (Minister of Communications and Digital Economy of Nigeria), Nuwa Kashifu Abdullahi (Technology expert and the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency), Alhassan Mohammed Gani (Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Kashere, in Gombe state) and Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai (Senator representing Yobe South Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly).

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University accepts applications from local and international students for its Bachelors, Masters and PhD level programmes.

Bachelor’s Programmes: The two main ways to get admission into ATBU are either through “JAMB UTME Exam” or “Direct Entry”.

  Admission Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates:
➤ Candidates should have one of the following qualifications; Cambridge A’Level, GCE A’Level, HND, ND, NCE, IJMB, JUPEB.
➤ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➤ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) including English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➤ Direct entry candidates do not need to write JAMB UTME. They just need to acquire and fill the JAMB Direct Entry Form.
*After a satisfactory admission screening or entrance test/interview, you will be directly admitted to the 200 Level (second year) course of your choice.

  Admission Requirements for JAMB UTME Candidates:
➨ Candidates seeking admission into 100 Level (first year) are required to write the JAMB UTME exam and score at least 180.
*Those who chose ATBU as their first choice and scored 180 & above in the JAMB UTME will then write ATBU’s Post UTME exam.
*Successful candidates will be given admission after consideration of their score at both the JAMB UTME and ATBU’s Post UTME exam.
➨ You will need to be at least 16 years of age.
➨ Possess five O’Level credit passes (WAEC/WASSCE, NECO, GCE or NABTEB) including English language and Mathematics. It must be in not more than two sittings.
➨ Candidates must choose the correct JAMB subject combination for their desired bachelor’s degree programme/course.
➨ Candidates must also meet the stipulated Post UTME cut-off mark for their desired/chosen bachelor’s programme.

Master’s Programmes: To qualify for Master’s Degree Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a bachelor degree in the relevant discipline
■ Possess a Postgraduate Diploma of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University or other recognized Universities with at least a pass at credit level.
■ Sit for a qualifying examination

PhD Programmes: To qualify for PhD Programmes, candidates must:
■ Possess a master’s degrees with a CGPA of at least 3.50 on a scale of 5.00.
■ Possess a qualifying examination and/or undergo a probationary period not exceeding 12 calendar months.

HOW TO APPLY
The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University has set up an online portal to assist candidates seeking enrolment into its institution. Hence, the applicant should visit the website http://portal.atbu.edu.ng/ to create an account, choose a course and follow all other relevant steps on the application process. The cut-off marks for both the JAMB and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is 180. The application period into the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University generally runs from the month of July to October.

The name Bauchi come from “Baushe”, a brave hunter, who was the first settler in Bauchi before the arrival of Mallam Yakubu the first Bauchi ruler. In 1976, Bauchi became a state comprised of the present Bauchi and Gombe.
Gombe state was created out of Bauchi state in 1997. Bauchi State has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 25.3 °C. Bauchi State has a total of 55 tribal groups with similarities in the people’s language, occupational practices, festivals, dress and there is a high degree of ethnic interaction especially in marriage and economic existence. The state’s economy depends mainly on agriculture.

Bauchi state is endowed with numerous natural touristic attractions such as the Wikki warm springs, the Yankari national park, and the Sumu wildlife zoo.
