Programme Overview

Objectives of the course
– Produce Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons with requisite skills and competencies in the overall care of the patient with general thoracic, cardiac and/or peripheral vascular problems.
– Produce Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons with the skills to translate research findings into clinical practice

Curriculum

The training programme will be completed in a minimum of 5 academic years and maximum of 10 academic years.

The first two years shall be common to all Masters’ Programmes within the department of surgery.

The course shall consist of 236 units of 60 hours each over 15 terms of 12 weeks each

All courses units shall be compulsory

The degree programme shall be offered full time in two parts;

Part one (years one and two) shall consist of the following courses:

Year one: Surgical Anatomy, Surgical Physiology, Principles of Surgery, Surgical Pathology, and Surgery, log book, Research methods, Biostatistics Epidemiology

Year Two: Principles and Practice of Surgery including applied molecular biology, and rotations in general surgery (6 months) orthopaedic and trauma surgery (3months), ICU and critical care (3 months).

Part two (years three, four and five), will consist of the following courses; Clinical Practice In Thoracic and Cardiovascular Carcinogenesis, Imaging and Oncology, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Endoscopy, and a Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery log book.

All taught course units covered will consist of lectures, clinical work, clinical teachings, seminars, conferences, demonstrations, tutorials, teaching in a surgical skills laboratory, log book, dissertation and on call duties.

To complete all courses as stipulated candidates will be expected to achieve a minimum of 60 contact hours a week.

The dissertation shall be agreed upon between the candidate and the department.  The writing of the dissertation shall be during the part two of the programme.

The Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery logbook shall contain a chronological list of all diagnostic and operative procedures completed during training.

A candidate may in special circumstances be discontinued from the programme;

On medical grounds if the senate shall find him/her unfit to continue.

A candidate exceeding the prescribed maximum duration of the course without valid reason shall be discontinued.

Admission Requirements

**Common Regulations for the Master of Medicine Degree in the  University of Nairobi shall apply.
**Candidates eligible for admission into the course shall fulfil the following conditions;
– Hold a basic medical degree i.e. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) of the University of Nairobi or an equivalent qualification from an institution recognised by Senate.
– Posses evidence of registration or eligibility to be licensed by Medical Practitioner’s and Dentists Board in Kenya for purposes of training.  Must also show evidence of retention on the list of the Medical Practitioner’s and Dentists Board
– Possess a certificate of good conduct from the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board or any equivalent authority from the country of origin.
– Show proficiency in use of the English language.
– Obtain a valid professional indemnity cover during the full period of training.
