Programme Overview

Many a times, there is disconnect between statistical theory and statistical application. Most statisticians produced, have a flare in the theory but have difficulty in analyzing statistical data especially one that requires application of statistical software. This limits their analysis of data in many fields such as in Biological and Physical Sciences, Agricultural, Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, and many other fields.

Statistics deals rationally and objectively with the uncertainty that accompanies variation phenomena as highly complex as the interplay of many factors that affects our environment.
The statistician‘s main task is to determine what type of data to collect, how to collect it and how to analyze it. These problems are solved by designing experiments or carrying out sample surveys.

Since statistical inference is concerned with inferring what the population is like on basis of the sample, the link between population and sample is provided by Probability Theory. Developing and assessing statistical models to describe the variation in some response in terms of other explanatory variables and applications of these models is also incorporated.

We apply concepts in Pure and Applied Mathematics such as Calculus, Linear and Abstract Algebra, Difference, Differential equations, etc in advanced analysis of data. Since a statistician requires a strong application background, computer programming and application courses such as Economics, Accounting, and Finance are included.

This degree programme shall therefore equip the students with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them work as Statisticians in diverse fields. A part from teaching, the graduates could work in Ministry of Planning, Central Bureau of Statistics, research institutions, pharmaceutical industry and non-governmental organizations such as public opinion pollsters.
In addition, this program will produce graduates who can undertake postgraduate studies in statistics world over.

Programme Objectives
The aim of the program is to provide students with a wide range of skills, knowledge, and attitudes to respond to their need for effective data analysis and management of surveys. The Bachelor of Science in Statistics program is to produce graduates that are able to:
i) design statistical experiments and sample surveys for collecting data.
ii) identify appropriate methods for presenting, analyzing and interpreting data
iii) apply statistical techniques to model relationships between variables and make predictions.
iv) design and implement algorithms to solve statistical problems.
v) produce graduates who can pursue post-graduate studies in this area.

Course Structure and Duration
The duration of the program shall be four academic years. A candidate should take a minimum of 18 CF and maximum of 24 CF per semester.

In addition to the normal semesters, the program has field visits and industrial attachments at selected industrial, educational or research establishments. The attachment course shall be taken at the end of third year of study.

The course code is four capital letters STAT standing for statistics. All the existing Statistics courses already described and coded as MATH have retained their current codes. The STAT code is followed by three digits:
1st digit indicates year or level the course is offered, i.e. (1, 2, 3, and 4).
2nd digit indicates the nature of sub-discipline of the course within the discipline.
Business and economics
General interdisciplinary
3rd digit, indicates the sequencing of the course
