Preventable diseases like malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS are the major contributors to morbidity and mortality especially in the developing world. The need for capacity building in the field of Public Health has been compounded by the continued increase in these preventable diseases which occur as a result of; Lack of behavior change, rapid population increase, environmental hazards emanating from the rapid urbanization and industrialization due to modern technological advancement.
The Bachelor degree programme in Public Health aims at producing Public Health specialists capable of addressing health issues by responding effectively to deteriorating environmental conditions that affect human health with a view to proposing possible solutions thereby enhancing good health and sustainable environmental management.
Target Groups
Health care is still one of the priority areas of government expenditure. Preventable diseases like Malaria, HIV/ADS and TB have greatly contributed to this greatest burden especially in the developing countries. This therefore calls for the need to prevent and reduce the transmission of both communicable and non-communicable diseases in the human population by improving physical, biological, cultural and social environmental conditions.
In line with this, various initiatives are championing disease prevention activities including the Global Fund to fight Malaria, HIV/AIDS and TB, the Role Back Malaria Partnership and the Millennium Development Goals. Therefore, Who Will Keep the Public Healthy?
Due to the rapid population growth and the increase in cases of preventable diseases, the labour market demand for Public health practitioners over the years, has not been matched with the existing training opportunities in the country and the region at large, hence ineffectively responding to deteriorating environmental conditions that affect human population and health.
The need for capacity building in the field of Public health has been compounded by the continued increase hazards emanating from the rapid urbanization and industrialization due to modern technological advancement hence filling the existing gaps in Public health training.
The programme intends to produce an Public Health Specialists who will be capable of integrating theory and practice in critically assessing, analyzing and managing public health issues affecting the health of the individual and the community. The public health graduate will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills through lectures, tutorials, group discussion, practical’s, research and field work.
Programme Objectives
Entry Vide Pre-University Programme
A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a mean aggregate of C plain with C plain in either Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry / Physical sciences, Biology/ Biological Science, English or Kiswahili.
Entry Vide University Bridging
Application Guidelines:
**Application forms can be downloaded from www.mku.ac.ke or collected from the school campuses/ marketing centres. Duly filled application forms should be addressed to the Registrar – Academic Administration.
The following Documents should be made available:
– Copies of all academic certificates including secondary school certificates, Bachelors, Diplomas & Certificate level transcripts and certificates.
– One (1) recent passport size photograph (write your name on reverse side)
– Copy of national I.D/Passport.
Application fee is as follows:
– a) Kshs 1000 for Certificate, Diploma and under- graduate programs for the East African applicants. USD 50 for the Non-East African Applicants.
– Kshs 2000 for Postgraduate programmes for East African Applicants. USD 100 for Non-East African Applicants.
NOTE:
Application for admission does not guarantee admission into the University for course applied for; this will be subject to fulfilment of all requirements and class size as approved by the University Senate.

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students = Kshs. 125,100
Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs 150,120
Students from Countries in the East African Community (EAC), pay the same amount as Kenyan Students. The six countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
NOTE:
– All international students (Non East African) are to pay additional (statutory fee, quality assurance & tuition fee) of 20% above the normal fee.
– The university fees payment can also be done in easy instalments within the semester. The instalments are as follows: 30% upon registration, 30%- second instalment, 20%-third instalment 20% – fourth instalment.
