Programme Overview

Preventable diseases like malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS are the major contributors to morbidity and mortality especially in the developing world. The need for capacity building in the field of Public Health has been compounded by the continued increase in these preventable diseases which occur as a result of; Lack of behavior change, rapid population increase, environmental hazards emanating from the rapid urbanization and industrialization due to modern technological advancement.

The Bachelor degree programme in Public Health aims at producing Public Health specialists capable   of   addressing   health   issues   by   responding   effectively   to   deteriorating environmental conditions that affect human health with a view to proposing possible solutions thereby enhancing good health and sustainable environmental management.

Target Groups
Health care is still one of the priority areas of government expenditure. Preventable diseases like Malaria, HIV/ADS and TB have greatly contributed to this greatest burden especially in the developing countries. This therefore calls for the need to prevent and reduce the transmission of both communicable and non-communicable diseases in the human population by improving physical, biological, cultural and social environmental conditions.

In line with this, various initiatives are championing disease prevention activities including the Global Fund to fight Malaria, HIV/AIDS and TB, the Role Back Malaria Partnership and the Millennium Development Goals. Therefore, Who Will Keep the Public Healthy?

Due to the rapid population growth and the increase in cases of preventable diseases, the labour market demand for Public health practitioners over the years, has not been matched with the existing training opportunities in the country and the region at large, hence ineffectively responding to deteriorating environmental conditions that affect human population and health.

The need for capacity building in the field of Public health has been compounded by the continued increase hazards emanating from the rapid urbanization and industrialization due to modern technological advancement hence filling the existing gaps in Public health training.

The programme intends to produce an Public Health Specialists who will be capable of integrating theory and practice in critically assessing, analyzing and managing public health issues affecting the health of the individual and the community.
