Kenya as a developing society is undergoing drastic social, psychological, economic, political, and Educational changes. The challenges arising from these changes require psychological support systems in all sectors of the country. The Bachelor of Psychology programme is expected to provide personnel who can effectively manage such challenges and other emerging social challenges and together bring about a mentally healthy, productive, and cohesive nation.
Objectives of the Course
This programme aims at producing graduates who have adequate competencies (theory and practice) for:-
i) Providing counselling and psychological care.
ii) Providing training on various theories and applications of psychology.
iii) Providing services in psychological assessment and interventions.
iv) Identifying and managing emerging issues in mental health.
v) Organising, administering and managing counselling and psychological support systems.
vi) Comprehending the theories and skills of psychological counselling.
vii) Employing the theories of counselling in psychological interventions.
viii) Providing therapeutic interventions.
ix) Applying the knowledge, skills, and competencies in psychology.
Course Structure and Duration
The programme may be undertaken in either fulltime or part-time mode. Fulltime students will be required to register for eight semesters (four academic years), taking a maximum of 21 credit factors (unless in the case of approved credit transfer) per semester whereas Part-time students will be required to take a maximum of 8 credit factors per semester. A total of 176 credit factors will be required to be taken by a student to graduate.
All courses in this programme shall be coded using the prefix PSYC denoting Psychology, followed by three digits as follows.
First digit shall denote the year of study.
Second digit shall denote the subject matter field in psychology
Third digit indicates the series (progression) of the course as follows:-
0. Basic courses
1. Theory of psychology
2. Applications of psychology
3. Contemporary issues in psychology
4. Research and seminars
Practicum provides in-depth training in the application of psychological principles in behaviour modification. The students will be attached to Educational Institutions, Counselling Clinics, Stress Management Centres, Employee Assistance Programme Centres, Rehabilitation Institutions, as well as Mental Health Institutions for a period of three months. The practicum shall be examined wholly by continuous assessment as follows: During the practicum, a student will be required to carry out a project which is relevant to the field of study.
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXVIII

To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.
Degree classification shall be in accordance with Egerton University StatuteXXVIII.
Applicants must satisfy entry requirements for admission into the University as prescribed by the Egerton University Senate. In addition, applicants must have passed K.C.S.E with a mean grade of C+ and minimum subject grades as indicated below:-
English or Kiswahili C+
Biology or Biological Science B-
Applicants with a minimum of Credit at diploma level in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Psychological Counselling, Education, Medical Health Professions, or Social Work, from institutions recognized by Egerton University Senate.
Applicants with a Pass at diploma level in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Psychological Counselling, Education, Medical Health Professions, or Social Work, from a recognized institution with at least two years of working experience in a relevant field.

– Certified copies of your Result Slip, Certificates and Transcripts.
– ORIGINAL RECEIPT (Application Fee): KShs. 2,000 for ALL Degree Programmes and Kshs. 1,000 for all Undergraduate Diploma Programmes: Payable to; Account Name; Egerton University, Kenya Commercial Bank; Account No:1108550703.
– Copy of your National ID Card or Birth Certificate.

Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs. 130,000
**EAC (East African Community) Students pay the same amount as Kenyan students. Countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
– Foreign students out of the East African Community pay 30% more that the Kenyan students.
