If you want to become a high school teacher, you first need to obtain a degree from one of the other faculties and thereafter enrol for the one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
Choose a degree programme with subjects (one up to at least second-year level and one up to third-year level) that will enable you to teach at least two appropriate school subjects.
The subjects for which teaching modules are offered, are as follows:
– Agricultural Sciences
– Business Studies
– Computer Application Technology (CAT)
– Information Technology (IT)
– Life Orientation
– Life Sciences
– Mathematical Literacy
– Physical Sciences
– Physical Education
– Religion Studies
– Visual Art
Take note: All teaching modules will not necessarily be offered every year. A minimum number of students per module are required.
You must have at least a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, which meets certain conditions.
Specific admission requirements for Teaching modules
– As a rule, a second-year subject or a third-year subject (comprising a single year module or two-semester modules) in your teaching areas, depending on the specific prerequisite pass requirements for each Teaching module.
– You will not be allowed to attempt to meet the admission requirements of a Teaching subject by doing undergraduate modules simultaneously to the relevant Teaching subject.
– See “Programme content for the PGCE programme” for the provisions and prerequisite pass requirements for each Teaching module.
You must apply in writing to be admitted to the PGCE programme.
The closing date for submissions is 30 October.
No student will be permitted to join the PGCE programme after it has started.
