Programme Overview

The goal of the Department of Nursing in implementing an upgrading programme BScN degree is to provide a strong foundation in the nursing programme for diploma nurses who aspire to undertake nursing upgrading course in a University that offers diverse courses that complement and enrich the nursing profession.

As part of the planning exercise, the department has considered the complex contemporary context of nursing, including rapidly changing health care practice arenas in which the graduates will practice and the dramatic changes in the populations for whom nurses will provide health care. The department will promote evidence-based practice which will integrate clinical experience, research and values to meet these challenges.

The scope of nursing practice in Kenya is changing and expanding. Nurses are being called upon to function in a variety of specialized settings such as HIV and AIDS clinics, health promotion and prevention programs. Daystar University is in a unique position to offer Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (BScN) upgrading program that integrates the beliefs and teaching of the university throughout the course curriculum and provides a holistic view of health care delivery. Kenyans are also looking for accessible, affordable and flexible Kenyan approved Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BScN) education courses to enable them serve individuals, families and communities in health locally, regionally and internationally.

The program will provide holistic training in nursing practice with emphasis in administration, education, research and leadership and the graduate will be expected to demonstrate servant- leadership traits including care, compassion, empathy, love and patience in their service.

Admission Requirements

The University shall admit into the BSc Nursing Upgrading degree programme, such candidates as shall be accepted by the Senate as being academically qualified, having met the Nursing Council of Kenya entry requirements, and those who accept the, University’s mission and philosophy as provided under Sections 4 to 7 of the university charter, without regard or preference to gender, ethnic origin, race being imposed as a condition for admission. The University may consider other criteria approved by Senate that enhances quality.

Minimum Admission Requirements
For one to be admitted to pursue the Diploma in Nursing to BScN Upgrading programme the following minimum criteria is mandatory:
– KCSE aggregate `C’ plain and KRCHN or KRN/M Diploma in Nursing OR
– KCE/EACE Division III and KRCHN or KRN/M Diploma in Nursing
– At least 2 years’ working experience after attainment of the Diploma in Nursing
– Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya

Application Fees for International Students: $18

Daystar admission forms are collected from either Athi-River campus or the Nairobi campus. On completion, the form is handed back to the registrar office with a fee of KSh. 2,000 which is not refundable. Deadlines for the application are; 30th November, 30th April and 31st July for January, May and August intakes respectively. Other required documents are:
– Two recent passport size photos for Kenyan student and four for international students all having names at the back
– Secondary, post-secondary, university or college certificates.
– Financial Information Sheet (Foreign students need to include a financial letter from sponsor guaranteeing payment)
– Completed student information sheet and copy of your passport (For foreign students only).

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students: $1,493
Tuition Fees for International Students: $1,548

*Tuition fees per year for Kenyan Students = 161,430KES
*Tuition fees per year for Foreign Students= 167,430KES

International Students pay an additional 6000KES (Day students), 8000KES (Boarding Students) of orientation fees to the normal tuition fees.

All fees for each semester are payable in advance or before the date of registration by bankers cheque or direct bank deposit. The University does not accept cash payments or money orders. In order to assist sponsors who cannot raise full fees, the University allows payment of tuition and hostel fees in four equal monthly instalments from the first day of the semester. Sponsors wishing to pay the fees by instalments must apply to the Finance Manager before the semester begins.
