The proposed training program will be 6 years.
The Principles of Surgery shall consist of mandatory rotations in General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Trauma & Surgical Critical Care and integrated lectures.
The degree programme shall be offered on full time basis consisting of three parts; part one 2 years, part two, 1 year, part three 3 years.
Part one will consist of the following courses: Surgical Anatomy and neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology and Surgical Physiology and Research Methods, Biostatistics and Epidemiology ( year 1); Principles of Surgery and Surgery logbook ( year 1& 2).
Part two will consist of the following courses: Neurology, Neuroradiology, Neuropathology, Neuro-otology, Neuro-ophthalmology and Clinical Neurosurgery (year 3). The courses will be given as clinical rotations (Neurology, Neuro-otology, Neurophthalmology and Neurosurgery), integrated lectures, neuroradiology and neuropathology seminars. The Neuropathology and Neuroradiology seminars will be given during clinical rotations.
Part three (year 4, 5, 6) will consist of The Principles and Practice of Neurosurgery (Neuro-oncology, Neurotrauma, Peripheral Nerves, Pain management-year 4; Neuro-oncology, Spinal surgery, Paediatric Neurosurgery- Year 5; Stereotactic/functional surgery, Skull base surgery, Cerebrovascular Surgery- Year 6-), Dissertation, and Surgery Log book. The courses will be given as clinical rotations in Neurosurgery, integrated lectures and seminars.
The programme shall consist of 11 courses, clinical surgical and neurosurgical skills, laboratory surgical skills, two logbooks and a dissertation.
All the subjects covered will involve lectures, clinical work, clinical teachings,seminars, conferences, demonstrations, tutorials and teaching in a skills laboratory.
The programme shall be completed in a minimum of 72 months and a maximum of 144 months.
The Common Regulations for the Master of Medicine Degree in the University shall apply.
The candidates eligible for admission into the program shall fulfil the following conditions;
– Hold a minimum of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree of the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognised by Senate.
– Degree should be registrable by the Medical Practitioner’s and Dentists Board of Kenya for purposes of training and candidates must produce evidence of registration with the same board at commencement of training.
– Trainees will be required to have a professional indemnity cover.
