The Biomedical Programme involves the integrated study of the gross, microscopic, and molecular structure and function of the human body, disease causing pathogens of the human body and the body’s defence against these pathogens and the reaction to tissue injury.
The Biomedical Programme provides the solid foundation for the study of clinical medicine and dentistry. Backed by hand-on practical, the programme equips students to acquire knowledge in the science behind clinical examination of patients, diagnosis, and interpretation of laboratory results and management of patients. Students also acquire the skill of biomedical research through innovative research undertaken by faculty members.
With the evolution of modern methods of investigating patients and the etiology of disease conditions now localised to the molecular level of organisation, knowledge in traditional basic and paraclinical subjects has more than before assumed greater importance.
However, learning these courses in subject basis makes it difficult for students to link the knowledge up to make meaningful clinical judgement. Integrations of these courses in various modules, ensures better understanding and application of the knowledge and encouraging the students to be lifelong learners.
Horizontal and vertical integration at this stage makes these student better prepared to study clinical medicine and dentistry and be better prepared to analyse patients clinical data
The aim of the curriculum is to produce pre-clinical medical and dental students, well grounded in knowledge and skills in the preclinical sciences and with basic knowledge in the clinical sciences to enable them proceed with clinical training. At the end of the pre-clinical programme, the student should be able to:
• Demonstrate excellent knowledge in basic medical science necessary for successful clinical training.
• Apply the knowledge acquired in basic medical science to enhance clinical decision making.
• Exhibit life-long commitment to self- directed learning and critical inquiry in pursuit of continued professional and personal development.
