Programme Overview

Course Rationale
The university conducted an extensive market survey prior to the designing of the programme where critical gaps in the technical development and training in the field of media and communication were identified. These included;

  1. Need for diversification
  2. New opportunities as a result of provisions in the current constitution and vision 2030 like reporting on parliamentary proceedings and counties, political communication
  3. Opportunities enhanced by technological advances e.g. Analog to Digital transmission, Online journalism
  4. Need for more practical skills that help to meet market demands
  5. The need to train more on Investigative Journalism
  6. Others like the role of citizen journalism, peace journalism, role of journalism in environmental issues, parliamentary reporting.

The Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media and Communication BA (MMC) programme was designed to fill the gaps identified.

Why study the programme
The BA (MMC) programme is designed to recognize that its graduates will; inter alia.
a)    Have strong technical and analytical skills that will:

  1. Harness human resource systems in media & communication organizations towards successful organizational performance
  2. Form a foundation of media planning & production

b)    Design and implement media & communication solutions that enhance media organizational performance.

  1. Acquiring, processing, designing and producing media & communication information.
  2. Modeling and managing communication organizational processes in the media.

c)    Exhibit strong ethical principles, values and virtues.

Target Groups
Media and communications have never before been considered as important as now. Their role is so vital that even the society in which we live in has been called ‘information’ or ‘network’ society to underline the importance of media and communications. The age of globalisation is marked by rapidly developing communications technologies. The rapid growth in the information industry and digital communications increases the demand for professionals and heightens the shortage of educators and trainers in these fields. Hence the Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media and Communication BA (MMC) which intends to meet the competences, enhance innovativeness and creativity, and to address identified gaps in media & communication technical skills development in the following areas: –

  1. Print media.
  2. Electronic media.
  3. Public Relations
  4. Communication & advertising.

The course incorporates technology to meet the demands of the current job market and anticipated continued influence of digital age in the media & communication industry.

Programme Objectives
The programme is customized to provide opportunities to those individuals interested in developing careers in Journalism and mass communication. The programme is designed to enable students to identify, probe, examine and act in response to tactical and strategic issues of concern to journalism and mass communication in a variety of practical contexts within local and international media.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements
a.    KCSE or equivalent certificate with a minimum of C+ and grade C+ (plus) in both English and Kiswahili or similar grades in an equivalent examination approved by the University Senate.
b.    KCSE with a C (Plain) or KCE Division II Plus a Diploma (Distinction/Credit –from a recognized institution) or Equivalent and a C plain in both Kiswahili and English Language.
c.    KCSE with a C (Minus) or KCE Division III plus a certificate and a Diploma with minimum pass (Credit) from a recognized institution or Equivalent;
d.    A level (2 principal passes and 1 subsidiary pass) or Equivalent
e.    Diploma in a related discipline from an institution recognized by the University Senate and a minimum of C- at KCSE. Diploma graduates may be eligible for credit transfers on application as spelt out by the University’s credit transfer policy.
f.    A graduate with a first Degree in any field from a recognized institution with a minimum of Second Class Honours (upper division) OR Second Class Honours (lower division) plus one year working experience in a related field.

d)    Entry via University Bridging
i.    A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a minimum of C+ and lacking clusters subjects, Kiswahili and English languages as in (i) above.  The Candidate must score at least a C minus in the subject he/she is bridging as offered by Mount Kenya University.
ii.    A holder of KACE certificate or equivalent with minimum of two principals and lacking O level clusters subject grades i.e. English & Kiswahili .The candidate must score in the subject in which he/she is bridging  as offered by Mount Kenya University.

e)    Entry via Pre-university Programme
i)    Diploma graduates in related field from a recognized institution
ii)    A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a mean aggregate of C (plain) and C (plain) in Kiswahili and 6 months.

Application Fees for International Students: $46

Application Guidelines:
**Application forms can be downloaded from or collected from the school campuses/ marketing centres. Duly filled application forms should be addressed to the Registrar – Academic Administration.

The following Documents should be made available:
– Copies of all academic certificates including secondary school certificates, Bachelors, Diplomas & Certificate level transcripts and certificates.
– One (1) recent passport size photograph (write your name on reverse side)
– Copy of national I.D/Passport.

Application fee is as follows:
– a) Kshs 1000 for Certificate, Diploma and under- graduate programs for the East African applicants. USD 50 for the Non-East African Applicants.
– Kshs 2000 for Postgraduate programmes for East African Applicants. USD 100 for Non-East African Applicants.

Application for admission does not guarantee admission into the University for course applied for; this will be subject to fulfilment of all requirements and class size as approved by the University Senate.

Tuition Fees for Kenyan and East African applicants: $1,099
Tuition Fees for International Students: $1,319

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students = Kshs 121,000
Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs 145,200
Students from Countries in the East African  Community (EAC), pay the same amount as Kenyan Students. The six countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

– All international students (Non East African) are to pay additional (statutory fee, quality assurance & tuition fee) of 20% above the normal fee.
– The university fees payment can also be done in easy instalments within the semester. The instalments are as follows: 30% upon registration, 30%- second instalment, 20%-third instalment 20% – fourth instalment.
