Programme Overview

The Master of Laws (LLM) Degree in International and Comparative Law offers a wide range of courses designed to provide students with the intellectual tools to promote and critically assess economic, social, and legal developments. The curriculum is flexible and allows students to pursue advanced studies in specialized areas (e.g., business regulation, Islamic law and Middle Eastern legal systems, gender studies, and international human rights law). LL.M. students have an invaluable opportunity to benefit from the multidisciplinary offerings of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP). Fulfilling the requirements of the LL.M. degree normally calls for two years of study.

The current curriculum for the LL.M. in International and Comparative Law matches the “generalist” orientation of the degree.  It is designed to provide students with as much flexibility as possible to take courses in their areas of interests.

Curriculum

The LL.M degree requires nine courses (27 credits hours) as well as a thesis of sufficient depth and length as specified below.

Four courses are required:
– Legal Research and Writing (3 cr.)
– Graduate Law Seminar (3 cr.)

Two out of the following three courses:
– Jurisprudence (3 cr.)
– Comparative Law (3 cr.)
– International Law (3 cr.)

Electives
Students will be able to take up to five courses as electives, three of which have to be law courses. The Law Department’s approval is required for electives offered by other Departments.

Thesis Requirements
The research requirement for the LL.M. is satisfied by writing a thesis of sufficient depth and length for the topic addressed therein and prepared under the supervision of a faculty member of the department. Students are required to register for the following course while fulfilling their thesis requirement.

– Research Guidance/Thesis (no cr., pass/fail)

Admission Requirements
 – Acceptance is by a decision of the Law Faculty Committee, which may grant provisional admission pending the fulfillment of certain conditions
– English language proficiency is required as per general AUC graduate admission requirements
– Admitted degree candidates should normally start their course sequence in the fall semester. Students enrolled in the AUC English Language Institute must complete all ELI Courses and modules before being allowed to enroll in Law classes. For these students, spring enrollment is allowed
– For students admitted to the LL.M degree without a first degree in law, the Equivalent Certificates Committee (ECC) of the Supreme Council of Universities in Egypt may consider on a case-by-case basis, the equivalence of the LLM degree
Application Process
Application Fees for Egyptian Students: $84
Application Fees for International Students: $84

How to Apply
1- Submit the online application form. (Application is available online only). The application can be renewed from the fall to the spring semester of the same academic year only. A new application should be submitted for a new academic year.
2- Fulfill the requirements of your secondary school certificate. The most common secondary school certificates accepted by AUC are listed below. The minimum cut-off scores for each certificate may change from one semester to another according to University requirements. Having the minimum academic requirements does not grant you an offer of a place but rather ensures entry to the selection process.
– Thanawiya Amma
– German Abitur
– IGCSE/GCSE/GCE British Certificate
– International Baccalaureate
– French Baccalaureate
– American High School Diploma
– Canadian Certificates
– Other Certificates

Note:
1. Late submission of admission credentials decreases your chances of declaring science and engineering majors because places in these programs are limited.
2. Check that you have fulfilled all the University’s language requirements, as demonstrated by your TOEFL/IELTS scores.
– Results of the TOEFL/IELTS exams may be sent directly to the admissions office. AUC’s code number is 0903
– Both tests should be completed no more than two years prior to the first day of the term for which you are applying for admission
– English placement depends on your TOEFL/IELTS test scores
– Students who believe their placement in the ELI is not appropriate for their level of English proficiency are encouraged to re-take the TOEFL or IELTS. AUC does not offer “exemption” exams of any kind
– The deadline to submit improved English placement test scores is the last working day before the first day of classes each semester

3. Check that you have submitted all required documents by the set deadlines. Your application and a final admission decision will be pending the submission of all these documents. Applications submitted after the set deadlines will be considered according to space availability.
4. Provisional Admission: AUC considers the most academically qualified applicants for provisional admission if they earned excellent grades or submitted the necessary documents prior to the set deadlines.
5. Final acceptance will be given after submitting your final transcript and proof of graduation by or before the assigned deadlines.
