For purposes of supporting and sustaining service in the public sector of the Ministry of Health, it has been the practice that newly qualified doctors serve for 2 years before being considered qualified for postgraduate selection. For academic purposes this is not the ideal situation as the 2 years are not monitored vis-a-vis the specialties that these people choose later and they lose touch with the academic momentum that would be so suitable for postgraduate work. The committee therefore feels very strongly that this matter be reviewed for purposes of accepting freshly qualified doctors for postgraduate studies after their internship.
Application for the course will be open to holders of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBChB) or its equivalent from a recognized University and they should have obtained at least a credit in surgery.
The application must be accompanied with academic transcript and recommendations from two referees who must be from reputable institutions. The upper age limit will be 32 years.
Prospective candidates must provide evidence of continuing surgical exposure/contact and practice.
Furthermore, he/she must provide evidence of good, ethical conduct. Where applicable, candidates will be required to submit their undergraduate logbooks where applicable together with their applications.
