Programme Overview

*Purpose of the programme:
The purpose of the BEngTech (Extraction Metallurgy) is thus to build the necessary knowledge, understanding, abilities and skills required for further learning towards becoming a competent, practising Extraction Metallurgy Technologist. Specifically, the qualification will provide the graduate with:

  • – Preparation for a career in engineering itself and areas that potentially benefit from engineering skills, for achieving technological proficiency and to make a contribution to the economy and national development;
  • – The educational base required for registration as a Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA; and
  • – For graduates with an appropriate level of achievement, the ability to enter NQF level 8 programmes and then proceed to Master’s degrees.

*Outcomes (Exit level outcomes)
The exit level outcomes as informed by ECSA are that students who complete this programme will be able to:

  • – Systematically diagnose and solve broadly-defined metallurgical problems by applying engineering principles;
  • – Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science and engineering sciences to defined and applied engineering procedures, processes, systems and methodologies to solve broadly-defined metallurgical problems;
  • – Perform procedural and non-procedural design of broadly defined components, systems, works, products or processes to meet desired needs normally within applicable standards, codes of practices;
  • – Conduct investigations of broadly-defined problems by locating, searching and selecting relevant data from codes, databases and literature, designing and conducting experiments, and analysing and interpreting results in order to provide valid conclusions;
  • – Use appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering tools, including information technology, prediction and modelling, for the solution of broadly-defined metallurgical problems with an understanding of their limitations, restrictions, premises, assumptions and constraints;
  • – Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with engineering audiences and affected parties;
  • – Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the impact of metallurgical activity on the society, economy, industrial and physical environment, and address issues by analysis and evaluation;
  • – Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of metallurgical management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team and to manage projects;
  • – Engage in independent and life-long learning through well-developed learning skills; and
  • – Comprehend and apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics, responsibilities and norms of metallurgical technology practice.

Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements For Applicants With a National Certificate (Vocational) (NCV)
For admission to a BEng degree (4 years) the applicant must have:
A NCV (level 4) issued by the Council for General and Further Education and Training.
Achieved a minimum of 70% for 5 of the 7 subjects – fundamental and vocational categories.
Passed English as Language of Teaching and Learning / First Additional Language as fundamental component with a minimum of 70%.
Passed Mathematics and Physical Sciences as Fundamental Components with a minimum score of 70%.
For admission to a National Diploma the applicant must have:
A NCV (level 4) issued by the Council for General and Further Education and Training.
Achieved a minimum of 60% for 6 of the 7 subjects – fundamental and vocational categories.
Passed English as Language of Teaching and Learning / First Additional Language as fundamental component with a minimum of 70%.
Passed Mathematics and Physical Sciences as Fundamental Components with a minimum score of 60%.

Admission Requirements For National Senior Certificate For Adults (NASCA) Applicants:
National Senior Certificate for Adults (NASCA): The following criteria will apply for admission to all undergraduate Engineering programmes (BEng and BEng Tech).
The following minimum subject requirements will apply for admission:
–English 60% APS 5
–Maths 60% APS 5
–Physical Science 60% APS 5
Applicants will be required to complete a PsyCaD assessment obtaining an unconditional recommendation;
Recommendation by the relevant Head of Department;
Senate Discretionary Conditional Admission for applicants who have successfully completed the NASCA, provided that the applicant meets all the requirements;
Admission will also be based on the availability of space according to the Enrollment Management Plan of UJ as approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Admission Requirements For The Amended Senior Certificate (SC(a)) Applicants:
Amended Senior Certificate (SC(a)): The following criteria will apply for admission to all undergraduate Engineering programmes (BEng and BEngTech).
The following minimum subject requirements will apply for admission:
–English 60% APS 5
–Maths 60% APS 5
–Physical Science 60% APS 5

Final School Results.
Valid Passport or Identity Documents or Birth Certificate.
Sworn English Translation of documents (Documents issued in any language other than English.
Provide proof of the English Proficiency where English was not used as a medium of learning and teaching.

Paper Application
Step 1: Select your qualification study choices 1 and 2. (Ensure you meet the admission requirements as set out in this prospectus.)
Step 2: Complete the academic application form with a payment of R200 for a paper application (no payment required for online application).
Step 3: Once you have submitted your application, please allow three weeks before checking on the status of your application. If your application meets the necessary requirements and there is space in your selected programme, you will be informed on whether your application has been successful or not. Please note that all official communication will be sent via email. You may also go to the UJ website to check your application status using your ID or student number.

Tuition Fees for South African Students: $3,266
Tuition Fees for International Students: $3,449

*The normal Tuition Fees for South African Students is R51,309

35% of the tuition fees need to be paid by April, and 100% by July.

All students must pay at least R3,870 before they begin their studies. Students residing on campus will need to pay at least R6,470.

*In addition to normal tuition fees, students from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries and other African Countries pay a non-refundable ICT levy, registration fee plus non-refundable international levy of R2000.

*In addition to normal tuition fees, students from the rest of the world pay a non-refundable ICT levy, registration fee plus non-refundable international levy of R17000

International Levy Amount:
SADC & Africa – R2,000
Rest of the World – R17,000

ICT Levy – R430
Registration Fee – R610

The SADC member countries are Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

For International Students:
**International Student Tuition Fees = Normal Tuition Fee (R54 180) + International Levy (R2,000) + ICT Levy (R430) +Registration Fee (R610) = R57220
-An upfront payment of 30% of tuition fees should be paid at registration.
-35% of the tuition fees to be paid by 30 April.
-35% of the tuition fees to be paid by 31 July.
The University will offer a 5% discount should all fees be paid at registration.
Fees generally increase between 10 and 15 percent per year. Please contact the University in December to obtain the approved fees for the 2021 academic year.
