Entrepreneurship spirit and Innovation is the backbone of the biggest economies in the world. In this regard, such big economies such as the USA have an education system that emphasizes entrepreneurship and innovation. Small businesses are critical to such big economies and have been invaluable in creation of employment and realization of great economical and social change in form of a strong and vibrant middle class.
We belief that introduction of a bachelor of entrepreneurship and small business management course (BENS) at Egerton University will create a specific and highly trained manpower that will drive entrepreneurship and provide skilled management in this important sector.
In this course (BENS), we seek to provide the student with requisite skills to be entrepreneurs and/or innovators and capable of providing consultation services to already existing businesses.
This course fits perfectly well with the ambitious vision 2030 of the Kenyan government, which promises to make Kenya a middle income country by 2030. Based on experiences from other countries that have witnessed great economical development, it would be impossible for Kenya to achieve such feat, without successful small businesses and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Therefore this course (BENS), addresses an important national issue i.e. strong and vibrant economy, responsible for its own citizens.
The aim of the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (BENS) degree is to provide students with necessary skills that can enable them to respond to their need for effective management of public and private enterprises.
The Specific objectives of this programme include:
i). To develop a coherent and broad based coverage of business organizations and their Management.
ii). To equip the learners with appropriate business skills thus enhancing their confidence and ability to critically evaluate business information requirements and develop solutions from moral, professional and academic perspectives.
iii). To provide students with experience in the development and use of computer systems for solving business problems and marketing managerial decisions. To prepare the candidates to undertake research and pursue Post-graduate studies.
Course Structure and Duration
i). The Bachelors of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management degree programme takes FOUR academic years for full time students.
ii). Part-time students may be allowed to cover the programme within EIGHT academic years.
iii). Each semester will have a maximum of seven (7) and minimum of (2) units for part-time students.
iv). The course code is four capitals letters BENS standing for Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Technology followed by three digits
v). First digit indicates the years of study i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4;
vi). The Second digit is the nature of the sub-discipline levels. 0 – General BENS Courses 1 – Small Business Courses 2 – Entrepreneurship Courses 6.4 Third digit indicates sequence of the course.
All the examination of the university shall be conducted in accordance with university statutes stipulated in the university statute No XXVIII.
The grading system will be conducted in accordance with Egerton University statutes XXVIII.
To graduate with a bachelor of commerce, a student shall be required to take and pass all scheduled courses within stipulated time.
The Bachelors degree classification shall be in accordance with Egerton university statute programs statute XXVIII
i). All candidates admitted to the degree programme of Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (BENS) must satisfy the minimum common entrance requirements of Egerton University.
ii). In addition a candidate must obtain at least a C grade in Mathematics.
iii). Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognised by Egerton University Senate may also be admitted.
iv). Admission may be offered to outstanding diploma holders in Co-operative Management, Banking, Finance, Agri-Business, Marketing, Insurance and Risk Management and Management Science disciplines passed with a credit or higher or their equivalent. Such cases will be treated on individual merit.
v). Admission may also be offered to those holding CPA II and/or its equivalent through mature age entrance scheme as specified by the faculty.
vi). Based on Senate approved guidelines, candidates may be allowed to transfer up to a maximum of 30% of the required programme credits from a diploma course or its equivalent from an institution recognised by the University Senate.

– ORIGINAL RECEIPT (Application Fee): KShs. 2,000 for ALL Degree Programmes and Kshs. 1,000 for all Undergraduate Diploma Programmes: Payable to; Account Name; Egerton University, Kenya Commercial Bank; Account No:1108550703.
– Copy of your National ID Card or Birth Certificate.

– Simply complete the Egerton University Online Application form and upload all the necessary documents, so that it can be processed by the administrative department
– The application will be complete once all the necessary fees have been paid.

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students = Kshs. 100,000
Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs. 130,000
**EAC (East African Community) Students pay the same amount as Kenyan students. Countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
– Foreign students out of the East African Community pay 30% more that the Kenyan students.
– The University reviews tuition fees on a regular basis.
