Philosophy of the programme
i) To nurture and build students and staff professionally towards educational development of the people of Kenya especially towards the national vision of an industrialized nation by the year 2030 and beyond.
ii) To offer a holistic approach in the field of education, science and technology to the needy Kenyans.
Rationale of the programme
Mount Kenya University mission propose to provide world class standards in training. With the advent of Modern Science and Technology, the education system in Kenya has undergone drastic changes in the past four decades or so. The changes have affected many courses of study that are being governed by market demands.
The employers are equally keen on the type of graduates being produced by Kenyan Universities. This curriculum of Bachelor of Education Arts is therefore designed to meet these challenges and demands affecting Kenya’s labour market as dictated by both local and international demands.
The curriculum is also designed to provide interdisciplinary approaches for training education professionals and scientists who need to work competitively in all fields and areas in the education sector of this country and beyond.
The programme shall also provide Bachelor of Education Arts graduates with real world situations full of various techniques of teaching, knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences that prepare them to meet challenges in the fields of Teaching Learning Process.
Justification for the need of the programmes
While striving to fulfil the gaps identified arising from the needs survey, the Bachelor of Education (Arts) programme has been designed to recognize that its graduates shall: –
a) Have strong educational orientation and teaching knowledge in order to provide teaching knowledge, skills and abilities that will:
i) Enable successful performance of education system in academic organizations
ii) Integrate all education organization systems
iii) Strategize Secondary and Tertiary levels of education and its systematization.
b) Exhibit strong educational principles, good interpersonal communication values and virtues through:
i) Appropriate teaching / training codes of conduct
ii) Effective and efficient trained team work
iii) Excellent work assignment and demonstration
iv) Being educationally inquisitive and objective in achievements.
c) Have strong analytic and critical thinking, knowledge, skills and abilities to:
i) Solve educational problems in academic institutions.
ii) Apply perspective and prospective educational concepts and information
iii) Conceptualize and systemize functions, principles, procedures, and data in academic institutions
d) Design and implement educational solutions that enhance educational institutions performance as per intended contrast to be introduced by:
i) Acquiring, processing, designing and storing academic information for the benefit of mankind
ii) Modeling teaching/ learning processes and, defining them.
iii) Helping staff and students in schools and colleges to attain their goals of teaching/ learning

Upon successful completion of the prescribed course of study for Bachelor of Education (Arts), graduates will have acquired knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to:
Admission requirements for the proposed programme
The following are the minimum requirements for registration into Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree Programme
Direct Entry
i) KCSE certificate with a minimum of C+ and grade C+ (plus) in English and two relevant teaching subjects.
Or
ii) KACE certificate with a minimum of the two principal passes in relevant teaching subject and O level Credit in English Language.
Or
iii) Diploma in relevant disciplines in the field of education from an institution of higher learning recognized by the University Senate.
Or
iv) Any other qualifications recognized by the University Senate.
Entry Vide University Bridging
i) A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a minimum of C+ and lacking cluster subjects (English language and two teaching subjects) as in (i) above. The candidate must score at least a C plain in the subject he/she is bridging in as in 2.7.1.1. (i) above.
ii) A holder of KACE certificate or equivalent with minimum of two principal passes and lacking O level cluster subject grades as in 2.7.1.1.(ii) above. The candidate must score at least C Plain the subject in which he/she is bridging in as 2.7.1.1 (ii)
Application Guidelines:
**Application forms can be downloaded from www.mku.ac.ke or collected from the school campuses/ marketing centres. Duly filled application forms should be addressed to the Registrar – Academic Administration.
The following Documents should be made available:
– Copies of all academic certificates including secondary school certificates, Bachelors, Diplomas & Certificate level transcripts and certificates.
– One (1) recent passport size photograph (write your name on reverse side)
– Copy of national I.D/Passport.
Application fee is as follows:
– a) Kshs 1000 for Certificate, Diploma and under- graduate programs for the East African applicants. USD 50 for the Non-East African Applicants.
– Kshs 2000 for Postgraduate programmes for East African Applicants. USD 100 for Non-East African Applicants.

Application for admission does not guarantee admission into the University for course applied for; this will be subject to fulfilment of all requirements and class size as approved by the University Senate.

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students = Kshs 105,600
Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs 126,720
Students from Countries in the East African Community (EAC), pay the same amount as Kenyan Students. The six countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
NOTE:
– All international students (Non East African) are to pay additional (statutory fee, quality assurance & tuition fee) of 20% above the normal fee.
– The university fees payment can also be done in easy instalments within the semester. The instalments are as follows: 30% upon registration, 30%- second instalment, 20%-third instalment 20% – fourth instalment.
