Programme Overview

The Department of Economics and Statistics of Kampala International University recognizes the fact that students, regardless of their background in education, are supposed to have analytic approach both to normal life and academic atmosphere in order to have strong decision making ability.

It is therefore the duty of this School to provide the students with the basic as well as advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of statistical principles in various analytical methods, and expose them to better awareness of the various factors that influence (or have influenced) modern approaches to descriptive and inferential statistics.

The Bachelors degree of Economics and Applied Statistics has been conceived in the light of the above. It is designed in response to the current demands for strong first degrees in terms of academic and professional content so as to enable the graduates to compete competently in the ever-thinning world market.

The programme aims at producing professional Economists and Statisticians who are specialized and competent decision makers rich in content and professional knowledge. It takes into account the fact that recent global developments have put heavy demands on the qualifications and continue to form a growing need for highly qualified people (Economists and Statisticians) to serve in their subject areas of specialization.

Objectives the Programme
– To produce competent Economists and Statisticians with adequate knowledge, skills, concern and proficiency to meet the challenges of Statistical Analysis and Economic Planning in a developing country.
– To instil in students an enthusiasm for Statistics, an appreciation of its application in different   contexts and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
– To establish in students an appreciation of the importance and sustainability of the academic, economic, environmental and social context.
– To create an atmosphere of decision making in order to maximize and utilize the scarce commodities of life, and to appreciate alternatives at less cost.

Objectives
– Attract motivated students of reasonably high intellectual calibre, both from within and outside Uganda and irrespective of race or creed, and teach them in a way that instils enthusiasm for the subject and encourages originality of thought and breadth of vision.
– Provide all students with a broad education in fundamental aspects of Economics and Statistics at a comparable level to other good Universities internationally.
– Provide a broad and balanced, supportive learning environment, underpinned by research.
– Provide distinctive modules at each level within appropriate areas of Economics and Statistics, drawing on the expertise and strengths of our academic staff.
– Foster the ability to work independently and as part of a group, and to develop presentation skills, both written and oral.
– Produce 1st degree graduates well equipped to pursue careers both in Economics, Statistics and computer data analysis.
– Produce graduates with the skills needed to undertake research at higher degree level and be able to interpret research findings.
– Produce graduates who will be the future leaders in the practice, applications and advancement of Economics and Statistics.

The program also gives students critical insight into the use of statistics as a tool for economic analysis and understanding.

Economics faculty members are dedicated to sound and effective pedagogy, to scholarship of the highest quality and to outreach to the local and business community. The department provides an intellectual foundation for the appreciation and understanding of economic theory and policy.

This foundation is developed within a broader educational perspective that stresses the importance of imaginative thinking, free inquiry and the pursuit of life-long learning. Philosophy of the Programme
This program is designed to provide students with the general knowledge of Economics, statistics, the local and international economies and prepare them for a career in academia, financial industry and consultancies.

Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements
a)    Candidates admitted to the programme must be holders of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent, with at least two principal passes in the relevant subjects.b)   Holders of relevant Diplomas in related subjects from Kampala International University or other recognized institution will be eligible for admission to the degree course.

Kampala International University admits 3 times in a year; in December/January, March/April and August/September.

Step 1: Pick-up an application form from the Admissions office at any of our Campuses below:
– Admission office at Main Campus in Kansanga, Kampala.
– Western Campus in Bushenyi
– For international applicants in Kenya and Tanzania, visit our offices in Nairobi and Tanzania.
– For other countries, visit the KIU Liaison Offices.

NOTE: Click on the link to complete the online application: https://admissions.kiu.ac.ug  (a scanned copy of the admission letter will be sent to your email, and once the application has been approved, the original copy will be collected from our Main campus in Kansanga (Admissions Office-Online Desk)

The application fee is 50,000Ug.shs for both Ugandans and International students (non-Ugandans). For online applicants, the application fee is paid to the Finance Office when you report collecting the original admission.

Step 2: Complete the application forms clearly and enclose or attach the following:
– 3 photocopies of each ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level Secondary school result slips or equivalent [Diploma and Bachelor Degree] and three certified copies of transcripts of Bachelor and Master Degrees [postgraduate degrees].
– A photocopy of a receipt for payment for the application form.
– 3 recent passport size photographs.
– Photocopies of Birth Certificate/ National ID/ Passport
