Programme Overview

The curriculum of the 3-year BSc in Construction Studies programme equips graduates to:
Use computer packages for computer-aided draughting presentation, scheduling and information processing;
Manage and prepare tender and contractual documents relating to building work;
Estimate cost and undertake financial management of construction projects;
Manage the construction of buildings and related infrastructure; manage the human resources within a construction firm;
Understand and evaluate economic issues concerning the construction sector and the construction firm at both a micro and macro level;
Understand the time value of money and apply discounted cash flow techniques for evaluating alternative property investments;
Communicate with construction professionals concerning spatial concepts, financial issues and construction assembly problems.

The aims of the programme are: to provide employable management graduates to the construction industry; to fully satisfy the criteria for accreditation in terms of the requirements of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP).

National Senior Certificate

FPS 450

Mathematics ≥ 65%

Physical Sciences ≥ 60%

NBT scores of Proficient for

Maths and Intermediate for AL and QL

International Students

A-level

• at least C for English at IGSCE/O-level; and

• at least C for Mathematics at A-level and C for Physics at A-level

AS-level

• at least C for IGSCE/O-level English; and

• at least B for Mathematics at AS-level and C for Physics at AS-level plus two other AS-level subjects with B symbols

Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSC)

At least four Higher level subjects with level 1 passes in Mathematics and Physical Science

International Baccalaureate

full IB Diploma with at least a Grade 6 pass at SL or a Grade 5 pass at HL for each of the subjects Mathematics and Physics

Note: Mathematical Studies is not acceptable

OTHER NON-SOUTH AFRICAN EXAMINATIONS

School-leaving subjects MUST include Mathematics.

Applicants from some countries (eg Angola and DRC) must have completed the first year of a four-year degree programme at a university in their country of origin before applying to UCT.

Applicants with only O-Level and/or IGCSE subjects need to complete the first year of a four-year degree programme at a university in their country of origin, before applying to the UCT.

Applications will be assessed on an individual basis. Meeting the above minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission may be limited due to available capacity.

Tuition Fees for South African & SADC Students: $3,783
Tuition Fees for International Students: $3,783

Please note that fees and payment requirements differ for local and international students. A further distinction is made between international students from the SADC region, international students from elsewhere in Africa, and international students from outside Africa. The following information does not apply to students registering at the Graduate School of Business (GSB).

South African citizens and South African permanent residents

An initial payment of fees (for tuition and residence) is due by January. If payment is not received on or before the due date, a one-off late payment fee of 8% of the unpaid amount will be charged. You will be allowed to register if the initial payment has not been received by the due date.

The amounts due are:

Tuition cost initial payment R27,000 (or the full fee where this is lower than the initial payment),

plus if applicable;

Residence (catering) initial payment R33,000, or

Residence (self-catering) initial payment R21,500

This is not the full cost. Final payment is due 30 June 2020.

International students from the SADC region

An initial payment of fees (tuition and residence and the administrative service fee) is due before registration. If payment is not received on or before the due date, a one-off late payment fee of 8% of the unpaid amount will be charged. Allow a minimum of 14 working days for the payment to reflect in UCT’s bank account.

The amounts due are:

Tuition cost initial payment R27,000 (or the full fee where this is lower than the initial payment), plus

Non-refundable administrative service fee R4,000

plus if applicable

Residence (catering) initial payment R33,000, or

Residence (self-catering) initial payment R21,500

This is not the full cost. Final payment is due in June.

International Students

International students must make a minimum initial payment towards the tuition fees, international term fees and residence fees (where applicable), prior to registration. If payment is not received on or before the due date, a one-off late payment fee of 8% of the unpaid amount will be charged. Allow a minimum of 14 working days for the payment to reflect in UCT’s bank account.

Payment due prior to registration for:

UCT full-time international fee-paying students (except Master’s & PhD students): R95,000

This is not the full cost. Final payment is due in June.
