Programme Overview

This is a three-year qualification offered under the Department of Social Work, at the Soweto campus of the University of Johannesburg.

Students must register for prescribed modules for the fulfilment of the Bachelor of Arts (Community Development and Leadership) degree.

What is Community Development:

Community Development is a career that strives to address community inequality, development problems at community level, as well as poverty and injustice in the country from a strengths-based, people-centred and participatory perspective.

If you want to improve community wellbeing and work with communities to change their conditions, this is the appropriate career choice. Community development workers are hired by the government and NGOs to uplift the social and economic conditions of communities.

This degree enables you to learn practical skills of working in communities to facilitate grassroots development.

Students shall also complete compulsory Internship.

Admission Requirements

National Senior Certificate (NSC)

– The minimum admission requirement for a diploma and degree programmes is a National Senior Certificate (NSC).

– Prospective students who comply with the minimum legal requirements for admission into a Diploma or Bachelor’s degree programme, but who do not meet the additional faculty specific admission requirements for a particular diploma or degree programme (i.e., they have not met the minimum Admission Points Score), may, upon good cause shown, be granted admission to such programme at the discretion of the Executive Dean concerned. If a prospective student does not meet faculty-specific admission requirements in respect of a module in such a programme that is taught in a faculty other than the faculty in which the programme is offered, the Executive Dean must consult with the Executive Dean of the faculty within which the module resides before admission into the programme is granted.

Paper application forms are available on request at a fee of R200. Please note, there is no payment required for online applications.

NB: If you receive a conditional acceptance letter, your matric results will determine final admission into the programme you have applied for. Only then will you be allowed to register.

Community Development Practitioners may be employed at government departments, municipalities, non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations, etc

Tuition Fees for South African Students: $2,811
Tuition Fees for SADC and African Students: $2,995

*The normal Tuition Fees for South African Students is R46,618

35% of the tuition fees need to be paid by April, and 100% by July.

All students must pay at least R3,870 before they begin their studies while students residing on campus will need to pay at least R6,470 before the begin.

*In addition to normal tuition fees, students from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries and other African Countries pay a non-refundable ICT levy, a registration fee, and a non-refundable international levy of R2,000.

*In addition to normal tuition fees, students from the rest of the world (outside Africa) pay a non-refundable ICT levy, a registration fee, plus a non-refundable international levy of R17,000

The SADC member countries are Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

For International Students:

International Student Tuition Fees = Normal Tuition Fee (R46,618) + International Levy (R2,000) + ICT Levy (R430) +Registration Fee (R610) = R49,658‬
-an upfront payment of 30% of tuition fees should be paid at registration.
-then 35% of the tuition fees should be paid by next 30 April.
-and the final 35% of the tuition fees should be paid by 31 July.
The University will offer a 5% discount should all fees be paid at registration.
Fees generally increase between 5 and 15 percent per year. Please contact the University in December to obtain the approved fees for the 2021 academic year.
