Programme Overview

The BHSc (Hons) degree in Biokinetics is offered through the Centre for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine in the School of Therapeutic Sciences.

– Health, Wellness and Practice Management
– Orthopaedic Conditions and Rehabilitation
– Special Populations and Disability in Sport
– Rehabilitation of Chronic Diseases and Disabilities
– Clinical laboratory
– Research Methodology
– Research essay
– Experiential practical exposure
– Professional internship and practice management
– Sports and exercise practicals including fitness testing and conditioning

Admission Requirements
– Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, human movement science or equivalent, and must include subjects of functional anatomy and exercise physiology or equivalent
– Successful completion of undergraduate anatomy and physiology courses
– Average undergraduate marks of 65% in relevant subjects
– Faculty of Health Sciences admission criteria apply for admission
Additional Entry Requirements
– Applications must be made before end of August of each year
– Applications must be accompanied by a CV, academic transcripts, letter of motivation and  two letters of recommendation
– Applications are made to the University, not the Centre for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine
– Interviews may be called for

How to apply
– Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. Click here to see an overview of the Wits applications process.
– Please apply online. Upload your supporting documents at the time of application, or via the Self Service Portal.
– Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal, view academic application status, accept an offer (once certified hardcopies have been received by SEnC), apply and check residence application status, and generate a fees estimate.
– Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.

Some career opportunities are;
– Private practice –biokineticists offer specialised exercise rehabilitation for persons with orthopaedic injuries, sports injuries and chronic diseases
– Universities employ biokineticists to assist with the training of students in the field and to conduct projects
– Sports institutions employ biokineticists for the rehabilitation, evaluation and exercise prescription of athletes
– Working in a multidisciplinary setting with other healthcare providers in providing healthcare and health promotion for athletes, employees, people with disabilities and chronic medical conditions
– Corporate sector – Several large companies employ biokineticists to improve the physical wellbeing of employees
– South African Defence Force and other similar establishments– rehabilitation programmes are provided for service persons

Tuition Fees for South African & SADC Students: $2,536
Tuition Fees for International Students: $2,536

*Students from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries pay the same annual tuition fees as South Africans plus an International Registration Fee (IRF). The SADC member countries are Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
*Students sponsored by the Government of Rwanda will be treated as and pay the same amount as SADC students.
*Students from all other countries (Non-SADC) will pay the same amount as South African Students
*Diplomats and their dependents stationed in South Africa & International Wits employees and their dependents will pay South African tuition fees + International Registration Fee (IRF).
