Programme Overview

The B.A. in Arabic Studies prepares students for a range of professional opportunities, including careers in government, education, business, and international development and communication. Modern Standard Arabic is the formal variety of Arabic used throughout the Arab world, particularly for reading and writing.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Direct Entry

  1. KCSE or equivalent certificate with a minimum of C+ and grade C+ (plus) in Arabic Language and C+ in either English or Kiswahili or similar grades in an equivalent examination approved by the University Senate.         Or.
  2. KCSE with a C (Plain) or KCE Division II Plus a Diploma in Arabic Language (Distinction/Credit –from a recognized institution) or Equivalent and a C plain in Arabic Language.Or
  3. KCSE with a C (Minus) or KCE Division III plus a certificate and a Diploma in Arabic Language with minimum pass (Credit) from a recognized institution or Equivalent; Or
  4. A level (2 principal passes and 1 subsidiary pass) or Equivalent Or
  5. Diploma in Arabic Language from an institution recognized by the University Senate and a minimum of C- at KCSE. Diploma graduates may be eligible for credit transfers on application as spelt out by the University’s credit transfer policy.     Or
  6. A graduate with a first Degree in any field from a recognized institution with a minimum of Second Class Honours (upper division) OR Second Class Honours (lower division) plus one year working experience in a related field.

Entry via University Bridging

  1. A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a minimum of C+ and lacking clusters subjects, as in (i) above.  The Candidate must score at least a C minus in Arabic Language as offered by Mount Kenya University.
  2. A holder of KACE certificate or equivalent with minimum of two principals and lacking O level clusters subject grades i.e. Arabic Language, English & Kiswahili .The candidate must score in the subject in which he/she is bridging  as offered by Mount Kenya University.

Entry via Pre-university Programme

– Diploma graduates in Arabic Language or related field from a recognized institution
– A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a mean aggregate of C (plain) and C (plain) in Arabic Language ie 6 months.

Application Guidelines:
**Application forms can be downloaded from or collected from the school campuses/ marketing centres. Duly filled application forms should be addressed to the Registrar – Academic Administration.

The following Documents should be made available:
– Copies of all academic certificates including secondary school certificates, Bachelors, Diplomas & Certificate level transcripts and certificates.
– One (1) recent passport size photograph (write your name on reverse side)
– Copy of national I.D/Passport.

Application fee is as follows:
– a) Kshs 1000 for Certificate, Diploma and under- graduate programs for the East African applicants. USD 50 for the Non-East African Applicants.
– Kshs 2000 for Postgraduate programmes for East African Applicants. USD 100 for Non-East African Applicants.

Application for admission does not guarantee admission into the University for course applied for; this will be subject to fulfilment of all requirements and class size as approved by the University Senate.

Tuition Fees for Kenyan and East African Students: $828
Tuition Fees for International Students: $993

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students = Kshs 91,100
Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs 109,200
Students from Countries in the East African  Community (EAC), pay the same amount as Kenyan Students. The six countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

– All international students (Non East African) are to pay additional (statutory fee, quality assurance & tuition fee) of 20% above the normal fee.
– The university fees payment can also be done in easy instalments within the semester. The instalments are as follows: 30% upon registration, 30%- second instalment, 20%-third instalment 20% – fourth instalment.
