Programme Overview

This program has been proposed with the intention of making it competitive while maintaining high standards. With the Courses offered, the graduates will become highly competitive in the job market and at the same time prepare them in becoming independent in making choices of career and self employment. Students are trained not only in the technical areas of specialization but also in personal development, communication skills and entrepreneurship.

Programme Objectives

The primary aim of the Applied Computer Science course is to provide general Computer Science Courses required in other disciplines. It is intended that upon completion of the programme the graduate should:
i) Be able to identify and apply software engineering and hardware engineering tools effectively;
ii) Have acquired adequate skills, ability to design and implement suitable computer applications, both software and hardware, and advice on such applications;
iii) Be equipped to pursue postgraduate studies in applied computer science; and
iv) Have attained academic competence in computer science to function as a productive member of his/her profession.


Course Structure and Duration
A student is required to register for at least 18 CF‘s in each of the eight semesters of study. In the first and second years of study in Applied Computer Science, the student studies a mixture of compulsory Basic and Applied Computer Science Courses together with selected Courses in Mathematics and Physics. At the end of the third year, students also attend field attachment in industrial setup that helps them identify application areas of their study and gain knowledge in industrial settings. It also helps them in preparation for the projects expected to be done in their fourth year of study. This course take four academic years which is equivalent to eight semesters for fulltime students.
The programme will adopt the code ACMP (Applied Computing) followed by three digits. The first digit will refer to the year of study.
The second digit will denote the sub-discipline as follows:-
0 – Introductory Courses
1 – Computer Architecture and Computer Hardware
2 – Operating Systems and Programming Languages
3 – Basic Computer Science
4 – Desktop Applications and Human Computer Interface
5 – Database Systems
6 – Software Engineering
7 – Computer Networks and Distributed Systems
8 – Management, Entrepreneurship
9 – Other application areas
The third digit signifies the sequential position of the course in a specific sub-discipline.
Courses that are taken by both Computer Science and Applied Computer Science students will adopt the Computer Science code (COMP).

Examination Regulations
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXIX.

Grading System
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with in Egerton University Statute XXIX.

Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.

Degree Classification
Degree classification shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXIX.

Admission Requirements

The candidates must meet the minimum requirements as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute
Candidates must have passed the K.C.S.E., or equivalent examination with the following minimum grades to be considered:
(a) Mathematics B
(b) B grade in one humanities subject and one language subject.

Holder of a diploma with credits passes and above in Computer Science, Applied Computer Science or equivalent from institutions recognized by Egerton University. Students admitted with Diploma in Computer Science, Applied Computer Science or IT may transfer credits according to Egerton University regulations.

Candidates who have completed Advanced level (A-level) courses with mathematics as one of their major subjects and have obtained at least two principal passes will also be considered.

Required Documents to be attached during Application include:
– Certified copies of your Result Slip, Certificates and Transcripts.
– ORIGINAL RECEIPT (Application Fee): KShs. 2,000 for ALL Degree Programmes and Kshs. 1,000 for all Undergraduate Diploma Programmes: Payable to; Account Name; Egerton University, Kenya Commercial Bank; Account No:1108550703.
– Copy of your National ID Card or Birth Certificate.

Online application procedure

– Simply complete the Egerton University Online Application form and upload all the necessary documents, so that it can be processed by the administrative department
– The application will be complete once all the necessary fees have been paid.

Offline Application Procedure
– An Application form can be downloaded through the school website:
– The application form must be fully filled and the relevant academic documents attached. It must be returned to the admissions office of the university according to the deadline set by the admissions office.

Tuition Fees for Kenyan and East African Community Students: $1,272
Tuition Fees for International Students: $1,654

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students = Kshs. 140,000
Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs. 182,000
**EAC (East African Community) Students pay the same amount as Kenyan students. Countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.


– Foreign students out of the East African Community pay 30% more that the Kenyan students.
– The University reviews tuition fees on a regular basis.
