Programme Overview

Agriculture is the mainstay of Kenya’s economy and is the basis of provision of food, shelter, employment and cash income. Approximately 80% of Kenya’s population lives m rural areas and therefore, the government must promote sustainable rural development through enhancement of agricultural production and natural resource management.

The Diploma in Agriculture and Rural Development programme at Chuka University is aimed at providing highly trained manpower equipped with a broad range of both conceptual and practical skills geared towards promoting agriculture production and resource Management.

The graduates who form part of the personnel required in extension service, public institutions and the private sector to assist in the development of a variety of enterprises both in agricultural production and resource management.

The Diploma in Agriculture and Rural Development is designed to provide graduates with a broad knowledge of agriculture and resource management so that they are able m contribute effectively to sustainable production.

This course target to provide a formal academic qualification for people who wish to obtain training at the tertiary level in area of agriculture. It is an ideal program for those who need to undertake a refresher course in agriculture, or who wish to broaden No knowledge in the same area.

The programme air at producing technical level human resource with practical knowledge and conceptual skills required for sustainable development of the agricultural production value chains through research, extension education, training, marketing and self-employment.


Loading and Duration of Study
To fullfil the graduation requirements for Diploma in Agriculture and Rural Development, candidates are required to take and pass at kart 149.5 CF’s of the courses approved by the Senate. The Diploma course in Agriculture shall take three (3) academic yens in a trimester mode.

Each calendar year will be made up of three (3) semesters of IS weeks each. The course can also be offered as a school based programme where students attend classes in April, August and December for two years. There will be eight weeks of field attachment after the first year of study.

Candidates must  pass all required courses to qualify for the award of the Diploma to Agriculture and Rural Development. Part-time students may take up to a maximum of three (3) years.
Examination Regulations Ordinary Examinations The ordinary Examinations shall be graded on the basis of percentage marks consisting of thirty percent (30%) as Continuous Assessment Tests (CATS) and seventy percent (70%) . Final Examinations.

The duration of the Final Examinations shall be as follows: A Course having three (3.0) Credit Factors or less shall be examined by a Paper of two (2) hours only. A Course having Credit Factors greater than three (3.0) shall be examined by a Paper of three (3) hours only. Where a Course is mainly practical in nature, it may be examined wholly or substantially by Continue. and/or Practical Assessment.

A candidate wishing to study for the Chuka University Diploma in Agriculture and Rural Development must satisfy the Minimum University requirement. A student must have obtained a minimum mean grade aggregate of C plain in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education(KCSE)In addition, the applicants must have passed the KCSE with a minimum grade of C plain in Biology or Biological Sciences, Englisli/Kiswahili and any two subjects from the following alternative categories: Category At Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics.Category B: Physical Science, Mathematics, Geography/Agriculture. Or a minimum of Division II in KCE, EACE or equivalent or Certificate qualification in agriculture from a recognized institution by Chuka University or any other relevant qualification.

The following documents should be made available:
– Originals & a copy of all Transcripts, Diplomas or Certificates (All originals, where necessary, will be returned)
– One recent passport size photograph (write your name on reverse side)
– Copy of the National Identity Card or Birth Certificate

– Preferred Campus should be indicated on the application form
– Certified copies of certificates and original fee payment receipt MUST be attached to the application form and returned latest two weeks prior to the commencement dates given for the programmes

The student will:
