Programme Overview

Agriculture contributes about 26% directly and 27% indirectly to Kenya‟s GDP and provides income to over 70% of Kenyans. Modern agriculture is complex and only individuals who have gone through an extended period of preparation in agriculture can effectively participate and contribute in it. The data justifies investment in school and tertiary level Education in agriculture.

The philosophical basis of the degree programme in agricultural Education and extension is the need to produce a critical mass of producers and manpower needed for research, extension and management in agriculture.

Programme Objectives
The primary aim of this programme is to prepare graduates with appropriate technical and professional competencies in agriculture, biology and extension Education. The specific objectives are to enable graduates:
i) Plan and teach agriculture and biology in secondary schools, teacher training colleges, and agricultural institutions;
ii) Develop, implement and evaluate agricultural Education programmes;
iii) Plan, implement and evaluate agricultural extension and rural development programmes; Manage Educational and agricultural organizations;
iv) Design and conduct research in agricultural Education and agricultural extension;
v) Develop and conduct training in agricultural extension and;
vi) Pursue further Education in agriculture, agricultural Education or extension.


Course Structure and Duration of Study
Courses offered in this programme by the department are coded as AGED followed by three digits. AG denotes Agricultural and ED for Education.
Use of the three digits is as follows:-
First digit indicates the year of study.
Second digit indicates the area of study.
Third digit indicates the level of progression the area of study.
The interpretation of the second digit is as follows:

The programmes shall extend for a period of four academic years. Each academic year shall consist of two semesters, each comprising of 17 weeks.
Diploma holders may be allowed to transfer courses towards the degree programme.
Diploma holders who qualify for credit transfer may take not less than two and half academic years. The Department and Senate will determine courses for which credit transfer is allowed. Credit transfers can be offered to a maximum of 30 percent of credit factors for the programme. Teaching Practice and Field Attachment will be conducted for 12 weeks and 8 weeks at the end of the third and fourth year of study, respectively.

Examination Regulations
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXVIII
Examinations shall be conducted at the end of each semester and grading shall consist of continuous assessment tests (CATs) accounting for 30% and final examination accounting for 70% of the total marks.
Courses which are purely of practical nature and seminars may be assessed entirely by continuous assessment.
Teaching Practice Assessment
Each student shall be assessed by a university lecturer in a minimum of four classroom supervisions.
The final score for each student will be an average of scores from the supervisions.
Teaching Practice Project Assessment Award of marks for teaching practice project shall be as follows:
Project proposal 25%
The project 50%
Project report 25%
Field Attachment Assessment Award of marks for teaching practice project shall be as follows:
University assessors 50%
Field supervision report 25%
Final report 25%

Grading System
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with in Egerton University Statute XXVIII

Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period

Degree Classification
Degree classification shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXVIII

Admission Requirements

Egerton University rules and regulations for admission into undergraduate studies shall apply.
In addition a candidate must have passed KCSE or an equivalent examination in the following subjects at minimum grades indicated:
Agriculture or Biology B-

Chemistry B-
Mathematics C+
Physics or Geography C+
Biological Sciences B
Physical Sciences B
A holder of a diploma with credit or above in Agricultural Education or related field from a college or University recognized by Egerton University.

– ORIGINAL RECEIPT (Application Fee): KShs. 2,000 for ALL Degree Programmes and Kshs. 1,000 for all Undergraduate Diploma Programmes: Payable to; Account Name; Egerton University, Kenya Commercial Bank; Account No:1108550703.
– Copy of your National ID Card or Birth Certificate.

Online application procedure

– Simply complete the Egerton University Online Application form and upload all the necessary documents, so that it can be processed by the administrative department
– The application will be complete once all the necessary fees have been paid.

– The application form must be fully filled and the relevant academic documents attached. It must be returned to the admissions office of the university according to the deadline set by the admissions office.

Career Opportunities

The Bachelor of Science degree programme prepares the manpower essential for school agriculture, agricultural extension and rural development. The graduates are also sufficiently qualified to assume responsibilities in the private sector and set up their own businesses.

Tuition Fees for Kenyan and East African Community Students: $1,136
Tuition Fees for International Students: $1,477

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students = Kshs. 125,000
Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs. 162,500
**EAC (East African Community) Students pay the same amount as Kenyan students. Countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.


– Foreign students out of the East African Community pay 30% more that the Kenyan students.
– The University reviews tuition fees on a regular basis.
